Ingredients

  • 2 cups precooked cornmeal (masarepa)
  • 1.5 cups warm water
  • 1 cup grated cheese (mozzarella or queso blanco)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoon butter for cooking

Instructions 

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal, warm water, grated cheese, and salt. Mix until a dough forms.
  2. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape them into patties about ½ inch thick.
  3. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add butter. Cook the arepas for about 5-7 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
  4. Serve warm with additional butter or your favorite toppings.
